Leyla Sharman's Ups and Downs (Mostly Ups)

Big Air with a Big Ow

The first stop of the Australian Slopestyle Tour took place at Big Air Sydney on 23 July.

I arrived a week early because I have never ridden in an indoor jumps park before and wanted to get lots of practice in. I was stoked to nail a 360 for the first time on the first day of practice and did heaps more after.

A few days later I was getting my line sorted for the comp and landed awkwardly after a 360 and ended up in the Northern Beaches hospital with a broken leg.

It’s going to be a couple of months off the bike but I have got a good rehab plan in place (physio, sport psych, exercise physiology and sports massage). Sadly it means I can’t make Crankworx Cairns but hope I’ll still get to Crankworx New Zealand in November to compete in Pump Track and the Dual Slalom.

New Sponsorships

I’m super stoked to announce that I have joined the Marzocchi family.

It’s a huge support to have suspension backing especially now that I’ve added new disciplines to the things I like to do so I am now running three different Specialized bikes.

Smith Optics are now providing me with their super cool gogles and sunglasses and J.Da Seymour Photomedia is going to help me get some more rad content out there. Capped Out are also supplying me with some goodies to make my bike look extra snazzy.

MTB Academy

I was recently selected to join the first ever MTB academy run by AusCycling.

There are about 10 other young Tassie mountain bikers who are in the state academy who are either into cross country, enduro or downhill. The academy involves training camps and we get advice on how to look after ourselves as athletes and a bit of support to get to certain AusCycling events.

AMB (May Edition)

It was so cool to see a ten page write up on the Women’s Progression Camp at Highline that I attended in March. I’m still feeling excited by that camp and the fact that it will occur again next year! I really hope I get invited back.

Coaching

I’ve got a day’s coaching training coming up in August in Hobart. AusCycling have kindly allowed me to join the group even though I’ll be on crutches.

Social media

Whilst I’m off the bike my social media activity won’t be as high but I will post about my rehab experiences and other MTB related stuff – I will have a lot of time to clean my bikes.

Events Coming Up that I’m Planning to Attend

  • Crankworx Rotorua, New Zealand, 5-13 November 2022
  • Enduro Fest, Maydena, Tasmania, 2-4 December 2022
  • Tassie State Downhill Champs, Maydena (I think it’s in November)

Thanks for reading, talk later!
